As president of the Adult Hospitals Group in the ORMC System, he credits his boss of fifteen years for opening many doors that gave him growth opportunities and a broad background for serving at the level where he is today. He loves the fact that his role today facilitates his opportunity to be at ‘a place where you can go and make a difference’.
Mr. Elswick is quick to give credit to his fantastic management team. He enjoys serving with like minded principles and being actively involved in daily operations. What are those stated priorities and principles that make a difference for his organization and their leadership team? Principle centered, relationship oriented and outcome focused.
When asked where staff education falls on the list of priorities, he responded, ‘it’s what we do and who we are. Learning is an everyday happening and always at the top of our list.’ You can tell he really means it when you hear him refer to numerous books and management terms he uses or refers to in conversation.
As he sees it, the challenges are many and varied in the healthcare arena today, but most relate to funding and capital. The magnitude of changes that are taking place, as well as those that are to come are huge. However, Mr. Elswick is confident their organization is on the right path and they just need to continue on it.
His ideas on improving healthcare today are simple and well founded in wisdom and experience. “Servant leadership is going to be critical and executives can’t sit behind the desk. They must take ownership and show the way by example.” He marks his wife, family, parents, team and boss as those who have inspired him and made his journey enjoyable.
We salute and applaud the leadership of Shannon Elswick. We know those who serve with him are fortunate to have his commitment and professionalism under their roof.
